IMPACT OF BANKRUPTCY ON ESTATE PLANNING

This program is intended to provide the estate planning professional – attorneys, accountants, financial planners and others involved in estate and asset protection planning process – with an overview of the impact which bankruptcy can and often does have on estate planning and asset protection efforts.  The attendees will learn about the various types of bankruptcy proceedings, the players involved, how bankruptcy can impact existing estate planning and asset protection efforts, as well as gain tips on how to avoid issues arising from the insolvency of testators, beneficiaries, and settlors and others involved in the estate planning and asset protection processes.  Bruce Akerly‘s primary areas of practice include commercial litigation, bankruptcy and financial restructuring, and creditors rights.  He is a frequent writer and lecturer in the areas of commercial litigation and procedure, creditor rights, collection of debts and judgments, and insolvency proceedings.  He has represented business and individual clients in negotiations, settlements, mediations, trial and appeal of various forms of commercial, bankruptcy and business entity disputes, commercial litigation, and other contested matters before administrative, state and federal courts.  Mr. Akerly is a member of the State Bar of Texas and Dallas Bar Association's Bankruptcy and Litigation Sections, ACA International (MAP division), ACA Southwest (Texas), Commercial Law League, and American Bankruptcy Institute.  He earned his B.A. degree from Southwest Texas State University and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from Texas Tech University School of Law.  He was a law clerk to the Hon. Mary Lou Robinson, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas from 1982-1984 and is admitted to practice before the United State Supreme Court, all U.S. District courts in the states of Texas and Wisconsin, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, the Eastern District of Michigan, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th and 6th Circuits and the 10th Circuit B.A.P.
