Strategic Communication with Family Business Owners – A Key to Successful Planning

DR. MARK VOELLER

This presentation will discuss why family business transitions fail and the role of communication in prevention for the estate planning process.  The use of a Family Code of Conduct will be discussed.  In addition, the keys to Managing Family Communication will be included.  A primer for estate planners is the understanding of the family culture and conflict.  The principles of conflict management and transformation will be discussed.  Participants are expected to leave with a set of new tools for intervening when communication breakdowns threaten the estate planning process.  This toolkit starts with new awareness of family conflicts that can disrupt the estate planning process. Participants will practice using a diagnostic technique tested with families world-wide. Finally, they will take away a basic understanding of conflict and the principles of conflict transformation.  Mark Voeller, an organizational psychologist and family systems expert, founded Dialogue Solutions, Inc., a management consulting firm specializing in working with families that own shared assets or operating businesses. He earned his MA from Wake Forest University and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.  Mark is an Associate Senior Partner with Cambridge Advisors to Family Enterprise providing educational and consulting services to family businesses and their advisors around the world.  Mark frequently partners with both financial and legal advisors helping to design strategies and structures to successfully pass operating companies and a legacy of wealth stewardship from one generation to the next.
