Who Owns and Benefits from My Life Insurance Policy and Why Should I Care?

And Planning for the Financial Protection of Children and Young Adults

AL KINGAN

Sponsored by Leu & Peirce

Life Insurance provides substantial benefits to families, businesses and society.  But setting up the ownership or beneficiary of the arrangement improperly can create income, gift, estate, financial, or other problems.  This presentation will provide help on how to cure the common, and often overlooked, ownership obstacles, and proper beneficiary arrangements. In addition, this presentation will review estate planning options for parents and grandparents to plan for the protection of their children and grandchildren.  Many parents attempt to protect their children by purchasing life insurance and diligently saving.  Few parents, however, envision that mother and father may both predecease their child.  Grandparents, who sometimes love their grandchildren more than their own children, often desire to create a financial legacy for their grandchildren.  Without proper planning, a grandchild could become the owner of the life insurance policy or other financial account when the child is legally, but not emotionally mature enough to handle having access to a significant amount of wealth.  This presentation will help to prepare advisors to converse with clients who often would rather avoid the cost of having a trust drafted, but do not fully understand the potential implications of not preparing for the worst case scenario. Al Kingan has been with MassMutual for over 23 years. Before joining MassMutual, Al spent almost seven years in the Tax Department of Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Al obtained an LL.M from Boston University, and passed the Massachusetts CPA exam.  Al received his undergraduate degree from Waynesburg College and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Al is a frequent author in the MassMutual Advanced Underwriter and other company publications; he has written for industry publications by the American Association of Life Underwriters, and Estate Planning magazine and the Journal of the Society of Financial Service Professionals.
