Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) vs. Mutual Funds: Risks and Fiduciary Concerns

MIKE DAVIDSON

Sponsored by North Dallas Bank &Trust

This presentation will help attendees understand the differences between traditional index mutual funds and ETFs.  Specifically, we will review the mostly unknown risks facing advisors when recommending ETF investments to clients.  Attendees will learn who the Authorized Participant (AP) is in ETF trading, the role the (AP) plays creating liquidity and helping to set prices and how this structure can create unknown risks for many involved in trading ETFs. In addition, the attendee will be able to educate investors about how robo-advisor platforms are susceptible these risks. Finally, we will briefly review the introduction of index mutual funds and ETFs, why they were developed, the key players involved, and the growth trends over the past 10 years.  After graduating from Texas Tech University with two Engineering degrees, Mike Davidson began his career helping businesses, governments and non-profits improve their business processes and financial systems at Arthur Andersen.  After leaving Andersen in 2002, he joined the financial services community and founded Financial Innovations to help clients Walk in Wisdom® with their capital.  Mike is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) and is currently serving as the president of the Dallas Society of Financial Services Professionals (FSP). Mike has been married for 20 years to his wife Renee and they have three wonderful kids: Luke, Taylor and Will.  Away from the office, Mike loves to watch his kids play sports, serves with his church, plays acoustic guitar and tries to catch trout on his fly-rod.
