DEATH AND TAXES ACROSS BORDERS

A MULTINATIONAL ESTATE TAX CASE STUDY

ROBERT SMITH AND STEVE HARE

 ROBERT SMITH

STEVE HARE

Sponsored by  North Dallas Bank & Trust Company and Frost Bank

Robert Smith and Steve Hare will provide an overview of the US nonresident estate and gift tax landscape by guiding participants through a messy, real-world example. International clients, heirs, and executors are often taken aback to learn that their US assets in excess of $60,000 may be subject to US estate taxation, and the mechanics of settling a cross-border estate are complex. Advance planning is crucial to avoid the worst, so estate planners must be aware of the issues and be prepared to assist clients with untying the Gordian Knot. Robert Smith believes that borders should not be barriers to achieving your goals. As leader of Saville’s Global Advisory Group, Robert strives to be an essential partner to global businesses and families, helping solve international tax problems and removing obstacles to cross-border success.  Robert is a member of the European-American Chamber of Commerce (EACC) Texas Chapter and is very active in promoting Texas as an international business and investment destination. Robert is also a regular presenter and active representative of Saville at Allinial Global’s international association conferences. Steve Hare is a lawyer with Ytterberg Deery Knull LLP. He practices in the areas of US and international trust planning, estate planning, and probate law. Steve is a dual-qualified lawyer and is both a Solicitor of England and Wales (non-practicing) and a Texas attorney. He has spoken and authored numerous articles on topics that impact high net-worth clients. Steve has extensive experience representing cross-border clients and advising on tax, compliance, and multi-jurisdictional probate issues. His practice also includes inbound and outbound trust and estate planning, administering complex estates, advising on the formation and management of private foundations, and creating and administering closely-held business entities.

There are continuing education credits pending for this meeting. The handout (if applicable) will be available on the website under the document library a few days prior to the presentation.
