SPECIAL NEEDS PLANNING FOR AFFLUENT FAMILIES

TRESI WEEKS

This presentation will discuss urgent and essential estate planning for families with children or grandchildren with disabilities, whether they are middle-income or upper-income.  Attorneys, financial advisors, trust officers and other estate planning professionals will benefit from this discussion. Attendees will understand (1) the need for special planning for children with disabilities; (2) the basics of government benefits and eligibility requirements for adults with disabilities; (3) the basic elements of special needs trusts, trust provisions, and how SNTs are used to care for the child with disabilities; (4) using special needs trusts for middle-income and affluent families, including tax planning; and( 5) creating a comprehensive plan for the future well-being of the child with special needs. Tresi Weeks began life as a trial attorney in 1987, and transitioned to estate planning in 1998.  While advocating for her child’s special needs, she learned of the great need for specialized estate planning for families of children with disabilities.  Her practice includes special needs planning, estate planning, probate and guardianship.  She is active in the disability community, and serves on the Board of Directors of Disability Rights Texas, the Association for Independent Living in Dallas, and Coventry Reserve.  She is the current president of the Estate Planning and Probate section of the Collin County Bar Association, and the Plano Star Courier 2016 Readers’ Choice Award named her as the best attorney/law firm in Plano.
