PRIVATE PLACEMENT LIFE INSURANCE

BOB CHESNER

Sponsored by Bank of Texas

The United States income tax structure is teetering on future unprecedented changes. The national debt is at record levels, and presumably, income taxes will need to increase to offset this debt burden. Further, the estate tax exemption is set to revert to 2017 levels in 2026 (adjusted for inflation). It is possible it may decrease even further. The high net worth individual and their advisors must be proactive in planning for both the current income tax (federal and state) and future estate tax implications. Private Placement Life Insurance (PPLI) is a versatile planning tool for the high-net-worth client to mitigate, and in some cases, illuminate taxes related to investment income taxes and estate taxes. PPLI is a product that is afforded outstanding tax benefits through the Internal Revenue Code that can serve in a traditional role of implementing planning strategies that reduce taxes at death but is well served for the more immediate issues of investment and income tax planning. As an investment and income tax planning tool, PPLI enables continued access to sophisticated investment strategies, yet reduces income tax liabilities by permitting such investments to grow income tax-free. Bob Chesner leads the firm’s insurance and investment oversight practice. Drawing on his extensive expertise and experience as a finance and insurance executive, Bob assists high net worth individuals and family offices in the design and implementation of domestic and international life insurance and annuity structures, consults on their property, casualty, and liability needs, and oversees the marketing and development of the firm’s insurance practice. He also consults with firm clients about the implementation, reporting, and analysis aspects of their investment portfolios as well as all other non-investment risk management matters. Bob serves as President of Edgewater Consulting Group, Ltd., a GBGR affiliate that provides a comprehensive post-sale service platform to insurance professionals in the private placement life and annuity marketplace. However, neither GBGR nor Edgewater Consulting Group, Ltd. is an insurance broker or registered investment advisor. Bob is also the firm’s Chief Operating Officer. In this role, he leads and oversees all of the operational, administrative, and financial functions of the firm.
