CRISIS PLANNING FOR THE ELDERLY
LORI LEU/MICK KOFFEND

As the population ages and the Baby Boomer generation enters retirement, professionals will find that they are called upon to assist their clients with a range of new issues, many of which fall within the realm of crisis planning. Some of these issues will include the extent to which professionals can continue to provide advice and work with clients who are showing signs of incapacity. The purpose of this presentation will be to provide information and guidance regarding how to help clients plan ahead to avoid the crisis and the potential need for guardianship. Lori Leu is an Elder Law attorney based in Plano and serving the North Texas area.  Lori graduated from Kansas State University, summa cum laude, with an honors degree in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences. She then graduated from Harvard Law School, and has more than twenty-four years of legal experience. Lori now provides legal guidance and representation primarily to senior adults and their families. She has a genuine passion for helping people who are facing incapacity and long-term care needs. Lori focuses her practice on all legal issues affecting seniors and long-term care planning, including financing of long-term care, Medicaid planning, VA benefits, estate planning, guardianships, and probate. Mick Koffend, MBA, CPA, RFG is Director of Services for Accountable Aging Care. Mick jointly founded Accountable Aging Care Management with his wife, Mary, in 2002. In addition to their professional expertise, Mick has met the challenge of making difficult decisions on behalf of elder and disabled members of his own family. He brings compassion, commitment, and a highly personal understanding of the real concerns families must address to ensure the family's medical, financial, psycho-social, legal and spiritual well-being.
